Sayin' Ain't Doin'
a message from Alloday
printed in The Flowering Tree, Winter 2000
Y’all may have heard that quote before. Very simple. Very true. We are often inspired and motivated to support an idea, or an action, and may do so with our thoughts and opinions, fired up with our emotions. We may, for example, sympathize with the trees and remaining forests, desiring to preserve their lives, and fully intending to do something to help. We often talk about what we are intending to do, and that is as far as it goes. We do not take action. We just talk.
Until we do take action, all our “sayin’” is about as effective as an Arkansas snowball in July. It will accomplish nothing, except to dissipate the energy of our thoughts — energy that could have been used to manifest our good intentions.
It is not enough to learn, to be aware of, or to talk about things. When we have found a worthy cause, we must realize that we need to support this cause with our work, funding, and continued attention, as did the treesitters in the following articles. They saw a need, and they climbed a tree. And others supported them.
The key word is Do. It is important that each of us looks around our community Medicine Wheel to see what needs to be done, and then do what it takes to accomplish those needs. If everyone were to take care of their own space on this planet, in harmony with their friends and neighbors, a lot of effective ”Doin’” would be done.
